Valve unveiled its new game to the world in an unconventional fashion. At Gamescom 2011 the developer hosted a large-scale player tournament with a $1,000,000 prize. Unlike many pre-release press demos some companies put together that tend to be rough around the edges, Dota 2 already looks incredibly polished and held up to fierce competitive play by some of the world's top competitors.

In case you missed the tournament, called The International, or aren't especially familiar with the Dota style of game, check out this video preview to get a sense of the basic gameplay.

Though not all elements of the game are covered here, including item acquisition and runes, this is a good way to get acquainted with Dota 2 if you never played the original or other genre entries like League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth.

A beta testing phase for Dota 2 is planned for some time soon. Are you interested in getting in?
